Kitties and Kiddos

Michael and I had two babies before Cameron and Allie came along.  These two have had their worlds turned upside down since the new babies came to town!  Mraz and Toca are our two kitties who have been wonderful with our new kiddos.

Mraz came to us during the hurricane of 2004.  I was working at Southern Lehigh and a student came in and asked if I wanted a kitten.  Mike and I were dating at the time and thought it would be fun to have a cat together.  The student's mother saw Mraz walking across her lawn during the heavy rains from the hurricane.  The whiskers on one side of his face were gone and he had a big cut on his tail.  Mike and I instantly fell in love with him and brought him home to Congress Apartments.

Toca then joined us a few years later.  We decided since Mraz had SO much energy, he needed a sibling.  We went to Maple Hills Animal Hospital to possibly adopt a new kitty.  There were two there looking for a home.  The first one was a spitfire!  He ran around the room constantly - batting at our legs, jumping all over everything.  Plus, he looked really cool with his spiky hair.  Mike and I were pretty sure we had met the cat that could give Raz a run for his money.

But then little Miss Toca came in.  She was the complete opposite of the spitfire.  She cowered in the corner underneath a chair, would shrink away from us when we tried to pet her, and was just an ordinary gray and white cat.  Mike and I again were leaning towards the first cat.  However, something about Toca made us rethink it.  Did we really want to bring another crazy cat into our home?  Would a calmer cat be a better match for our all ready crazy cat?  So -- home came Toca with us.

The two slowly became best friends and became Mike and my little babies.  We've spent many nights in our home with just the two cats and us.  They both have their own personalities:  Toca more relaxed and lazy; Raz still the adventurous cat.  We were a bit worried to see how they would react when the new babies joined the mix.

As we walked into our home for the first time with the babies, Mraz was a little distraught.  He got all puffy and shrunk away from us.  We never thought he was going to hurt the babies but we didn't like to leave the babies alone on the floor with him nearby.

Toca was completely indifferent to the babies.  I could literally be sitting next to her with Cameron in my arms and she wouldn't show any interest.  She did, however, notice Cameron the other day.  She jumped up on the couch, took a sniff of his head, and streaked away.  Cameron was a bit smelly -- this was after our ride home from Pittsburgh and he hadn't had a bath in quite a few days!

So all in all, we think our babies are going to get along quite well.  Both Mike and I have pictures of us as little kids sleeping next to kitties.  Hopefully we'll be able to get some of these shots in the future!

Needed to include these next two pictures.  Toca seems to be exhausted with living with the twins.....Raz is a little on edge!
